Cold messaging

Cold messaging is sending first messages in a messenger to people who have never been in contact with the company and are not expecting to hear from it.

What it looks like

A rep gets a list of numbers and starts writing: a greeting, a short offer, a question. The recipients do not know the sender. Some ignore the message, some reply, some block the number or report it as spam.

This is the messenger version of a cold call, with one difference. A call leaves no trace, while a message stays in the chat and the recipient can report it with one tap.

Why it matters

Cold messaging can open new markets, but it carries a direct cost: the health of the numbers. Reports and blocks from strangers reduce trust in a number on the platform side. Too many of them lead to restrictions, a spam block or a ban, and the number takes its conversations with it.

For an owner, the question is not only “how many replies did we get” but also “how many numbers did it cost us”.

Typical mistake

Sending the same text to a large cold list at full speed from a fresh number. This combines every risk at once: strangers, identical wording and a sudden spike in activity.

The second mistake is pressure. Several messages in a row to someone who never answered look like spam even when each one is polite.

What to do

Keep cold volume small and steady. Start with warmed-up numbers, vary the wording and say honestly who you are and why you are writing. Give an easy way to say no. Watch replies and complaints, and stop at the first sign of trouble. Treat cold outreach as an experiment with a budget, not as the main channel.
