Virtual number

A virtual number is a phone number that works over the internet or through a cloud operator without a physical SIM card and can receive calls and SMS on several devices.

What it is

An ordinary number is tied to a SIM card in a phone. A virtual one is tied to an account with a telecom operator: calls and SMS arrive in an app, on a computer or are forwarded elsewhere. There are permanent virtual numbers that a company rents for a long time, and one-time ones used only to receive a code.

How it looks in practice

A company takes a number with the needed country code, for example +1234567890, connects a work messenger to it and gives the team access. If the number is registered to the company, it is not lost together with a phone and does not leave with a dismissed employee.

Why it matters

Messengers treat virtual numbers differently. They recognise some ranges and meet them with suspicion: registration may fail, and a new account on such a number more often falls under restrictions. One-time numbers are especially risky: other people have used them before, and the number’s history is not yours.

The second risk is recovery. A messenger may ask for a code again a year later. If the rental has ended and someone else got the number, they can sign in to your account or lock it.

The typical mistake

Registering work accounts on the cheapest one-time numbers. The saving ends in blocks and lost access. A number that clients depend on must belong to the company permanently and be protected with a second factor.
