Telegram bot

A Telegram bot is an automated Telegram account that runs on a set program: it takes commands, answers standard questions and passes data on.

In plain words

A bot is neither a person nor a regular account. It is created with Telegram’s official tool, has no phone number and is controlled by a program. A person writes to the bot, and the bot answers according to a scenario: buttons, menus, a questionnaire, an order status.

How it looks in practice

A client taps Start, chooses “Check payment status”, enters a contract number and gets an answer. If the question is non-standard, the bot hands the conversation over to a staff member. All of this works around the clock and in the same way for a thousand people.

How a bot differs from a sales rep’s account

The main limitation: a bot cannot message a person first. It only replies to those who started a conversation with it. That is why a bot is a poor fit for cold outreach and a good fit for inbound flow, reminders to people who subscribed and collecting applications.

Another difference is trust. People talk to a bot as to a machine: briefly and to the point. Complex conversations about money, debts and deals are ones people prefer to have with a live person.

Why it matters to a manager

A bot takes repetitive questions off the team and gives answers at any hour. But it does not replace a sales rep. Its job is to relieve people, not to hide the company from the client.

Common mistake

Building an endless menu with no way out to a human. A client who fails to find the right button three times leaves. There should always be a clear path to a live employee and a time frame in which they will reply.
