Viber blocked your number: why it happens and what a team should do
Short answer
Viber blocks numbers for whatever looks like spam: mass messages to strangers, recipient complaints, unofficial apps and automation. A block can only be disputed through Viber support, honestly and without template letters. Chats are stored on the phone and in the backup. A new number running the same broadcast to the same list usually gets blocked faster than the old one, so the first thing to change is what got you blocked, not the SIM.
The number didn’t break. It was switched off.
Yesterday the work Viber number was sending reminders to clients. Today it sends nothing. Viber says the account is blocked. The rep says they didn’t do anything. The team lead says the broadcast was “really small”.
Viber disagrees.
Below: why Viber blocks numbers, what you can do, and why the first instinct, “let’s get a new SIM”, usually leads to the second block.
Why Viber blocks a number
Viber doesn’t publish exact rules and almost never names the reason for a specific block. But the picture is nearly always the same: the number behaves like spam.
- Messages to people who didn’t expect them. A bought list, an old list, “a partner’s list”. To the recipient you’re a stranger with an ad.
- Complaints. A recipient can report a message or block the sender. Several of those in a row is a strong signal.
- Identical texts. Hundreds of identical messages from one number don’t look like conversation. They look like exactly what they are.
- A sudden spike. The number was quiet, then messaged the entire list in one evening.
- Unofficial apps and automation. Anything that connects to Viber around its rules raises the odds of a block.
None of this requires bad intent. A habit of “let’s remind everyone” is enough.
A block, not a glitch: how to tell
- A glitch: messages fail for everyone, colleagues too, Viber is slow. It passes on its own.
- A problem with the number: the carrier deactivated the SIM, or the number went too long without a top-up. Check by calling it.
- A block: Viber says outright that the account is blocked or deactivated, or the number stops working after login. It doesn’t pass on its own.
If it looks like the third, go through the steps below in order.
What to do in the first hours
- Stop the broadcast on every number. If one number got blocked for a broadcast, the other numbers running the same broadcast are next in line.
- Don’t re-register the number in circles. Reinstalling the app, logging in from another phone, more attempts: that’s not a fix, it’s one more oddity in the number’s history.
- List the clients you were in conversation with. Especially those waiting for an answer, a payment or a confirmation. A colleague on another work number will write to them.
- Don’t lose the phone with the history. Don’t reset it or hand it over “for a reflash”. The chats are stored on it and in the backup.
- Work out what the number was doing before the block. Who it wrote to, how much, with what text. Without that, your support request will sound like “we didn’t do anything”. Everyone’s does.
How to contact Viber support
A block is disputed only through Viber support. There are no other routes that work reliably.
- Write as the owner of the number. The number, the country, what the company is and why you use Viber.
- Describe honestly how you message clients. If there was a broadcast, say so, and say what you’ve changed.
- No templates. A letter “from the internet” that thousands of people have already sent gets read accordingly.
- No promises you won’t keep. “We’ll never message clients again” isn’t a plan. It’s a lie.
Nobody guarantees the number comes back. Services promising “unblocking for a fee” guarantee only one thing: the fee leaves.
We covered how to write these requests for WhatsApp in the signal on how to appeal a WhatsApp ban. Viber works on the same logic: honest, short, with what has changed.
Why a new number lives shorter
The most common team reaction: buy a new SIM and carry on. Same list. Same text. Same evening.
A new number with no history and a sharp start looks worse than the old one. The same recipients get a message from a stranger again, and complain again. The result is predictable. The team concludes that “Viber got nasty” and buys another SIM.
A number isn’t a consumable. The consumable here is your clients’ patience. How to bring a new number in carefully is in the signal on warming up a new number.
What a manager decides
Who you write to
Messages from your own numbers go to people who expect them: your clients, people you already have a conversation or an agreement with. A bought list on Viber isn’t sales. It’s a lottery with a known outcome.
How you write in bulk
For mass messaging, Viber has official business channels. Mass messaging from your own numbers can be done carefully, but it’s a craft with its own rules. Details are in the signal on Viber broadcasts without bans, and the choice between an official account and your own numbers is in the signal “An official account or your own numbers”.
How many numbers, and who holds the history
If the whole team writes from one number, a block means the team stops. If the chat history lives only in the phone, a block also means losing the history. Several numbers, history with the company.
Who is responsible for numbers
Work numbers have an owner inside the company: someone who knows where the SIM is, where the backup is and which numbers are writing right now. Without that person, every incident is investigated from scratch.
Checklist: a Viber number doesn’t get blocked for habits
- Your own numbers write only to people who expect the message
- Bought and old lists are never broadcast from your own numbers
- Mass messages go through an official channel or follow the craft’s rules
- Texts vary instead of hundreds of identical ones
- A new number is brought in gradually
- No unofficial apps are connected to work numbers
- After a block, the broadcast stops on every number
- The support request is written by the number’s owner, honestly
- The chat backup isn’t in an employee’s personal cloud
- The team has more than one work number
Viber rarely explains why it blocked a number. The team usually knows anyway. It just doesn’t like saying it out loud.
Everything else we discuss in person.
The number was switched off once. The second time, you’ll switch it off yourself.
Questions and answers
Why did Viber block my number?
Usually for what looks like spam: lots of messages to people who didn't expect them, complaints from recipients, identical texts, unofficial apps and automation. Viber rarely names the exact reason.
How do I unblock my Viber account?
Only through Viber support: a request with your number and an honest description of how you use Viber. There are no workarounds that work reliably, and "unblocking" services take money more often than they return numbers.
What happens to my Viber chats after a block?
The history is stored on the phone and in the cloud backup. If the phone isn't reset and there is a backup, the history doesn't vanish right away. But you can't reply to clients from a blocked number.
Can I just get a new number after a Viber block?
You can, but if you keep sending the same broadcast to the same list, the new number gets blocked faster. First change what got you blocked: who you write to, what, and how often.
How do I message clients on Viber in bulk without getting blocked?
For mass messaging, Viber has official business channels. From your own numbers, write to people who expect the message, without identical texts and without sudden spikes.
