Chat Export

A chat export is a download of a chat's history, or of a whole messenger account, into a file: texts, dates, attachments and participants.

In plain words

Message history is saved separately from the messenger, as a text file, an archive or a web page. In Telegram you can export account data from the desktop app; in WhatsApp you export a single chat.

Why a company needs it

  • to keep the history with a customer when an employee leaves;
  • to attach correspondence to a dispute or claim;
  • to move history into another record-keeping system;
  • to review a manager’s work over a period.

Why it matters to a manager

An export is a copy of the database. A full account export contains every customer, amount, document and agreement. Whoever made the export carried the company out in one file. So the question is not “can it be exported” but “who, when and why”.

For a court, a single export may not be enough. Evidence requirements depend on the country: sometimes a notarized inspection is needed, sometimes the device itself. That is a question for a lawyer before a dispute, not after.

A common mistake

Remembering exports on the day of dismissal. By then the employee may have deleted chats, and part of the history may vanish with the phone. Conversation history with customers should be kept by the company continuously, not exported at the last moment.

A second mistake is storing exports anywhere: on personal flash drives, in forwarded files. Every such copy is a potential leak.
