Sales conversion

Sales conversion is the share of leads, inquiries or deals that end in a paid purchase over a given period.

How it is calculated

Sales conversion = paid deals / leads that entered sales, for the same period. If 400 leads came in and 48 paid, conversion is 12%. These are example numbers.

The base matters. Conversion from all inquiries, from qualified leads or from deals that reached an offer are three different numbers. Each is useful, but they must not be mixed.

Why it matters

Conversion connects marketing spend to money. With the same lead flow, a team that converts better earns more without extra budget. For an owner, it is one of the clearest signs of how well the sales team actually sells.

Split by stage, conversion shows where the funnel leaks. Split by rep, it shows who needs help and who can teach others.

Typical mistake

Comparing reps by a single conversion number when they get different leads. One handles warm repeat clients, another handles cold inquiries. Their numbers cannot be compared directly.

Another mistake is chasing conversion by filtering leads. A rep who rejects every difficult client may show great conversion and bring less revenue. Conversion must be read together with volume and revenue.

What to do

Choose one base and stick to it. Measure conversion by stage, source and rep, using the same time window. Record why lost deals were lost, so a drop in conversion can be traced to a cause, not just noticed.
