Guarantor
A guarantor is a person or company that agrees in writing to repay a borrower's debt if the borrower fails to do so.
In plain words
A guarantor is a second pair of shoulders under a loan. The borrower takes the money, and the guarantor signs that, if the borrower stops paying, the lender may ask them to pay. It is common when the borrower’s own history or income is not enough: a young client with a parent as guarantor, a small company with its owner as guarantor.
How it looks in practice
A borrower takes 8,000. A guarantor signs a guarantee for the full sum. After three missed payments, the lender, following the contract and the law, may claim the debt from the guarantor. The guarantee can be full or limited to a part of the debt or a period of time. Its terms are set in a separate document or a section of the contract.
Why it matters to an owner
A guarantee widens the pool of borrowers a lender can serve and lowers expected losses. But a guarantor is only as strong as their own finances. A guarantor without stable income adds paperwork, not security. The guarantor is also a separate person with their own rights, and contact with them must stay within the law and the contract.
Common risk
Treating the guarantor as just another contact for the debtor. The guarantor is a party to the agreement, not a relative to be pressured, and contacting people who are not guarantors about the debt is restricted in many places. The rules on when a guarantor can be asked to pay, how a guarantee ends and how it may be enforced differ by country, so they should be checked with a lawyer.
