Telegram spam block: why your number was limited and how to keep working
Short answer
A Telegram spam block is an automatic limitation on a number suspected of spam: it usually can't write to people who haven't messaged first, but still talks with existing contacts. Check the status with @SpamBot, stop sending from that number and redirect clients to another one. A date means temporary; no date means indefinite. The company protects itself with several numbers, care with new accounts and a choice of who it writes to.
Not everything that breaks quietly breaks suddenly.
In the morning a sales rep writes: “I can’t send a message to a client, Telegram says the account is limited.” An hour later a second one reports the same. By lunchtime the broadcast is stuck, and the head of sales can’t tell what happened or who is to blame.
A spam block is one of the most common reasons work numbers in Telegram suddenly “go silent.” Below: what it is, why it happens, how long it lasts, what to do in the first hours, and how to set up the work so one limited number doesn’t stop the whole team.
What a spam block is
A spam block (an account limitation for suspected spam) is a protective measure by Telegram itself. If a number’s behavior looks like a mass, intrusive mailing, the platform restricts what it can do: usually it can’t write to people who haven’t messaged first and aren’t in your contacts, and sometimes it can’t add people to groups.
Important points:
- It is not a full ban. The account keeps working: you can still talk to people who are already talking to you.
- The decision is automatic, and Telegram doesn’t disclose the exact rules. Any “magic” limits found online are guesses, and a process shouldn’t be built on them.
- The limitation may be temporary or long. The duration depends on the situation, and nobody knows it in advance.
How long does a Telegram limit last
There is no fixed term. There are two kinds of limit. A temporary one ends by itself: the bot names a date, and after it the abilities come back. An indefinite one has no date and does not go away on its own.
@SpamBot helps tell them apart. With a temporary limit it says until when the limit lasts. With an indefinite one there is no date in the reply: the bot only says the account is limited. A missing date is the sign that waiting will not help.
Any figure you read online, “three days” or “a week,” is someone else’s case. Your number has its own history, and only the bot’s reply tells you what applies to it.
How to remove a Telegram spam block
A temporary limit is removed by time: stop the behavior that caused it and wait for the date. With an indefinite limit you can file an appeal. The first route is through the bot itself: it offers to dispute the decision if you believe it is a mistake. The second is through the Telegram support form, where you describe the situation briefly and calmly. The decision stays with Telegram, and the answer takes time.
Any “guaranteed removal methods” you find online guarantee nothing. Paid services, workarounds and “secret” tricks do not change the platform’s decision, and often make things worse. There is one honest strategy: appeal, and keep working from your other numbers.
More on the indefinite restriction in a separate signal: the permanent Telegram spam block.
Why numbers get limited
Telegram doesn’t publish a list of reasons, but practice shows recurring scenarios.
Behavior that looks like spam
- Many messages to strangers. Cold contacts who weren’t expecting you are the main risk factor.
- Complaints. If recipients tap “Report spam” or block you, the system draws conclusions quickly.
- Identical texts. The same message sent unchanged to dozens of people is easy to recognize.
- A sharp rise in activity. A number that sent a couple of messages a day for weeks and suddenly sends hundreds looks suspicious.
The state of the number itself
- A new, unwarmed number. It has no history of normal conversation, so little trust.
- An empty profile. With no name, photo or contacts, a number looks like a blank prepared for mailing.
- Suspicious logins. Frequent changes of devices and login locations can also play a role.
Most often it isn’t one cause but a combination: a new number plus a cold list plus an identical text plus a sudden start.
How to check whether a number is limited
It takes a minute:
- Open Telegram from that number and find the official bot @SpamBot.
- Tap “Start” or send
/start. - The bot will tell you whether the account has limitations and, if so, until when they apply.
If the bot says everything is fine but sending still fails, the cause may be different: the client blocked you, the login to the account dropped, or the connection is gone. Don’t treat a spam block where there isn’t one.
What to do right away
- Stop sending from that number. Every new attempt under a limitation only hurts its reputation.
- Check the status through @SpamBot and note the date if one is given.
- Don’t try to “work around” it: don’t create ten new numbers or change devices in a panic. That raises the risk for your other accounts.
- Redirect the clients. A colleague from another work number answers those you can’t write to right now.
- Work out the cause. What was sent, and to whom, over the last few days: a new list, a new text, a sudden jump in volume?
- If the limitation doesn’t lift or doesn’t match expectations, use the appeal the bot itself offers. Don’t promise yourself or clients a specific date.
How to organize work so one block doesn’t stop everyone
A spam block can’t be ruled out completely, but it can be turned from a sales stoppage into a minor annoyance.
1. Several numbers, not one
If all the work rests on one number, any limitation is a pause for the whole team. Several work numbers give you a margin of safety when they are registered to the company.
2. One person responsible for the numbers
Someone has to know which numbers exist, whose name they are in and what is happening with them now. And has the right to stop sending without waiting for the plan to be met. Pressing on with accounts in a moment of trouble only makes things worse.
3. New numbers aren’t thrown into a broadcast
First a filled-in profile, ordinary conversations, a gradual rise in volume. More in the signal on warming up a new number.
4. A message to a person, not a template
Addressing people by name, tying the message to the client’s situation, making clear who is writing and why. It sells better and looks less like spam.
5. Focus on people who expect your message
The more recipients who know you and expect to hear from you, the fewer the complaints. A cold list is always a risk zone, and the decision to go into it belongs to the lead, not to a rep with a plan.
6. A procedure for a block
Decide in advance who takes over the clients of a limited number and what they will be told. There is no time to invent it in the moment.
Questions for yourself as the lead
Work numbers are often connected to a CRM for Telegram or, more broadly, a CRM for messengers. But the causes of a spam block lie not in a system but in decisions. Ask yourself:
- How many numbers were limited last quarter, and was the cause ever reviewed?
- Where did the people the team writes to come from?
- Who is responsible for the numbers and can stop sending?
- What will clients hear if their number goes quiet tomorrow?
How it works on our side we show when we meet, not in an article.
Checklist: Telegram spam block
- The team has more than one work number
- Numbers are registered to the company, and a specific person is responsible for them
- New numbers are warmed up rather than sent straight into a broadcast
- The team writes to people who know the company, and a cold list is the lead’s decision
- Messages speak to a person, not to “everyone”
- It is clear who stops sending at the first signs of trouble
- Limitation status is checked through @SpamBot, not by guesswork
- There is a procedure: who writes what to the clients of a limited number
If two or more of these are missing, the next spam block will stop the work before anyone sees it coming.
A number doesn’t go quiet out of nowhere. The signals just went unread.
